Day 6: City tour of Cusco

Our private city tour of Cusco begins at 09:00 after breakfast. We begin the tour visiting the Temple of the Sun (El Koricancha) where later the Monastery of the Holy Dominikus (Spanish Domingo) was built on its walls. Afterwards we go to the main square of the city, the Plaza de Armas, (the Square of Arms). There we visit the cathedral and the church, „La Compania“. Inside the cathedral hangs the largest and most famous bell in South America that can supposedly be heard 40 km away. The main altar is made out of solid silver. Under it is the altar made out of carved cedar wood and decorated in gold.
After this we go to the archaeological park of Sacsayhuaman where you can find the fortress of Sacsayhuaman. The area around Sacsayhuaman was in earlier times the most vulnerable entrance to the capital of the Inca Empire and because of this a strong fortress was built here. The lowest wall alone is around 600 m long. Three terraced shaped walls built over each other in zigzag shape are very well preserved. We also visit Kenko (the wounded), a cult and celebration square which is surrounded by a jagged rocky area with caves and crevices, and Puca-Pucara, a former mountain fortress which consists of terraces with towers, stairs and dwellings. We also visit Tambo Machay–also known as „Bath of the Incas“, a kind of water sanctuary.
After around 4 hours we drive back to the hotel.

Day 7: Cusco – Valle Sagrado (sacred valley) – Aguas Calientes (hot springs)

We are picked up at 08:30 from the hotel and begin a 2 day group tour Cusco – Valle Sagrado – Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Cusco.
Firstly we visit the archaeological find of Pisag, situated on a mountain top from where we can see the greater part of Valle Sagrado.
Pisag, one of the most beautiful monumental centres, consists of scattered groups of platforms and architectural structures on the slopes of the mountain. It combines in a perfect way landscape and buildings of former times. Afterwards we have the possibility to find out more about the habits of the people who live here.
Next after lunch we visit the fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo, which was built to guard the entrance to this area from the valley and protect it from penetrating enemy tribes of jungle Indians.
We have the possibility to walk along the village streets and get an idea how it was during the Inca empire in this military, religious, and cultural centre. Around 18:00 we take the evening train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes for 1 hour and 45 minutes. We also spend the night here.

Day 8: Ruins of Machupicchu – Cusco

The high point of every South America trip is a visit to the Inca ruins of the city of Machupicchu. Machupicchu (Quechua for „old summit“) is a well preserved city of Inca ruins which lies at an elevation of 2.350 metres on an Andes mountain top over the Valley of Urubamba 112 km away from Cusco. The huge construction of the city of Machupicchu is one of the most visited archaeological places in South America. It’s a mountain ridge completely reshaped by human hand almost 700 metres over the Urubamba river. The amazing complex is not visible from the valley below but from above you can see almost everything.
The Inca city of Machupicchu is surrounded on three sides by rugged and steep cliffs. The wild Urubamba River flows below. The complex was built in the 15th century by the Incas.
Very early, after breakfast, we drive in an upwards direction 10 to 15 minutes to the Inca ruins of the city of Machupicchu to enjoy the spectacular sunrise from this beautiful place. Afterwards we have around a 2,5 hour guided tour followed by free time inside the ruins of Machupicchu. Later we take the bus down back to Aguas Calientes to have lunch.
